SARGANTANA

The Pitiusic lizard, Podarcis pityusensis, locally known as “Sargantana,” is without a doubt the most iconic endemic animal of the island. A few years ago, they could be seen everywhere in large numbers, but with the arrival of invasive snakes 20 years ago, their population has been declining drastically and is now critically endangered. On each of the small islets surrounding Ibiza, there are subspecies that have adapted differently, resulting in lizards with blue, orange, yellow, or even black pigmentation.

It is of vital importance to preserve this species, as it is unique in the world and can only be found on our islands.

BLAUET

The common kingfisher, Alcedo atthis, locally known as “Blauet,” is a very special bird for us. Very few people on the island know that this species visits us during the Autumn and Winter seasons. It is a bird commonly associated with Northern Europe and the Iberian Peninsula, but it is undoubtedly also a protagonist in Ibiza.

It can be found in the island’s wetlands from early September until the end of March, when it migrates north in search of milder areas to raise its young.

VIROT

The Balearic shearwater, Puffinus mauretanicus, locally known as “Virot,” is another icon of Ibiza. It is the only seabird endemic to Spain and breeds exclusively in the Balearic Islands, nesting in caves along the cliffs. It is easier to spot around the islands during the breeding season (February to June). Afterwards, they disperse across the western Mediterranean Sea and can even reach the British Isles.

This is a highly threatened species, with a population of around 3,000 breeding pairs.

PEIXETERA

The osprey, Pandion haliaetus, locally known as “Àguila peixetera,” is the largest predator on the island. This is a species found in many parts of the world, but in Ibiza it became extinct as a breeder more than 50 years ago. Fortunately, since 2014 they have returned to Ibiza’s coasts, and today there are around 25 pairs breeding from February until they leave the nest in August.

They are difficult to spot and can often be mistaken for a seagull, but if you pay close attention, you may see them along the island’s most remote coastal areas.

GENETA

The common genet, Genetta genetta, locally known as “Geneta,” is the top predator of Ibiza’s forests. It is similar in size to a domestic cat but is easily recognized by its long tail, which is as long as its body. The genets found in Ibiza belong to an endemic subspecies adapted to the island’s conditions, Genetta genetta isabelae, introduced by the Arabs. It is considered a vulnerable species due to habitat fragmentation and decline.

They are nocturnal animals, which makes sightings quite rare, and they are quick to detect our presence.

ERIÇÓ

The hedgehog found in Ibiza is the North African hedgehog, Atelerix algirus, locally known as “Eriçó,” and, like the genet, it is a subspecies, Atelerix algirus vagans. The hedgehog is now a protected and valued animal, but in the past it was hunted and eaten throughout the Balearic Islands. Today, its main threats are vehicles and a skin disease caused by the snails they eat.

These animals are easy to spot at night, but you have to be careful not to step on them! They play a vital role in the ecosystem, and they have also been observed eating snake eggs.
